Kindergarten place
Vienna offers municipal kindergarten places for children up to school age. You can register online or by paper form year-round, with the main registration period in November and December. Spots are allocated based on set criteria by the end of March.
How it works — step by step
- Register online via the city's form portal (wien.gv.at) or create a Stadt Wien Konto to receive your customer number instantly
- Alternatively, request a paper form by calling +43 1 277 55 55 or using the contact form, then submit by email, fax, post, or drop box
- Provide the required documents: photo IDs of legally responsible persons and proof of employment or training (not older than 3 months)
- Indicate your 2 preferred kindergarten locations during registration
- If your child has a disability or chronic illness, disclose this during registration; a consultation meeting will follow
- Wait for notification by end of March regarding whether and where your child receives a place
What you need
- Child and at least one parent/guardian must have primary residence (Hauptwohnsitz) in Austria
- Photo ID of all legally responsible persons
- Proof of employment or training not older than 3 months (pay slip, employment confirmation, income tax assessment, study confirmation, or employer confirmation of return from parental leave with start date)
- For mid-year registration: contact the kindergarten service centers directly
Frequently asked questions
Is there a legal entitlement to a kindergarten place?
No. While the city offers about one-third of Vienna's kindergarten spots, there is no legal right (Rechtsanspruch) to a place. Allocation is based on set criteria.
When should I register?
You can register anytime, but the main period is November–December for the following September. The exact timing within this window does not affect allocation—spots are distributed by criteria, not first-come-first-served.
Can I register mid-year or for urgent needs?
Yes, contact the kindergarten service centers (+43 1 277 55 55) or visit in person. Availability is limited but the city tries to help with short-notice requests.
